Samuel Stimpert, 35, boise art gallery owner

Sam Stimpert is the co-owner of the Visual Arts Collective (VaC), 1419 W. Grove St., which just celebrated its first anniversary. I recently caught up with Sam and he agreed to answer a few of my questions.
Jeanne Huff: Describe a typical day at the VaC.

Samuel Stimpert: Sit and wait and hope people come to buy art. I do a lot of working on the Web site when it's slow. VaC isn't just an art gallery — it's a multi-use art space.

We do everything from private parties to theater. But mostly, we like to stick to arts-related events. I'm a roadie, I'm a sound man, I'm a speaker mover. (Laughs.) Because we don't have any money, I have to do everything.

JH: VaC is a little over a year old and still evolving. What is your vision for VaC?

SS: We kinda want to model ourselves after Consolidated Works in Seattle, a multi-use art facility. It has a bookstore, coffeeshop, live music, theater, a huge art gallery, studio space, offices. That thing you love when you're in school, you lose when you're out of school, that connection between artists and other mediums — you learn to weld from the welder, screenprint from the screenprinter.

JH: What do you do for fun?

SS: Snowboarding is my passion. And art. Metal work. Foundry building. I volunteered for Boise State, rebuilt their foundry. Now I get to be involved in all that. I help Francis (Fox) with all the pours. I consider myself pretty lucky. What I love about it is the process, and I get to do it all.

JH: What source(s) do you use to get your news?

SS: Mostly the Internet. CNN sometimes. The Grambo Report. (Laughs.) (Note from Jeanne: The Grambo Report is a fake news show that appears 9 p.m. Thursdays on public access, TVCTV Channel 12.)

JH: Favorite music?

SS: I like everything, depends on my mood. Right now I'm obsessed with Lyrics Born, a rapper from Berkeley. (It's) very well-educated, conscious rap, not thug rap. He played at Neurulux, the first non-smoking show I've been to there. He won't play anywhere where there's smoking. He'll play at the Big Easy in October.

My favorite song is "Keeping Your Poop in a Jar" by Hayseed Dixie, a country band that does a lot of AC/DC covers. The real reason I love it is my friends Skully (Ryan Dav is) and Tim Lewis sing it around the campfire. (Laughs.)

JH:
Books?

SS:
Recently, nothing but computer tech manuals. I do graphics design and computer programming. I read art books.

JH:
Movies?

SS: I love Federico Fellini.

JH: Likes? Dislikes?

SS:
I like good people who do good stuff. I don't like bad people who do bad stuff.

JH: Favorite food?

SS:
Raisin Bran is probably my regular thing that I eat all the time. I like to cook Mexican food.

JH: What's the most exciting show coming up at VaC?

SS:
The Urban Art Show, 11-11 (Nov. 11). It's not specific to street art or graffiti. It's young. New-school. They're going to paint a car — we'll have a car in there.

It all started because I love graffiti art. I don't see it as a blight. It helps make our city cool.
